ALL-FEMALE LINE-UP FOR CINDY SHERMAN UP LATE
Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) will present a line-up of genre-defying, risk-taking musicians across seven dates when the Cindy Sherman Up Late program commences Friday 17 June.
Presented in conjunction with the ‘Cindy Sherman’ exhibition at GOMA from 28 May to 3 October 2016, this latest offering in the Gallery’s popular after-hours program celebrates the power of ‘she’ with an all-female line-up of international and Australian performers including Eleanor Friedberger (US), Kimya Dawson (US), Mojo Juju (Mel), Sampa the Great (Syd), Jess Ribeiro (Mel) and others.
Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) Director Chris Saines said ‘Cindy Sherman’ was the first major Australian solo exhibition by the New York-based artist in more than 15 years and that GOMA would open exclusively after hours from 5.30-10.00pm on select Friday nights for the Up Late program.
‘Audiences will have a chance to see ‘Cindy Sherman’ after dark and engage in exhibition tours, live music and a series of floor talks with writers, stylists, performers and choreographers’, said Mr Saines.
Each Up Late night will kick off with a set from Brisbane DJ collective Cheated Hearts (Jane Doe, Sezzo Snot and Eevvee) supporting the performers:
17 June: Eleanor Friedberger, known as one-half of the Fiery Furnaces, plays Up Late as the first stop on the Australian tour for her third studio album, New View.
24 June: Brisbane four-piece Major Leagues bring the playful charm of their new EP, Dream States to the Up Late stage.
1 July: Melbourne’s Mojo Juju performs songs from her genre-challenging new album Seeing Red / Feeling Blue.
9 September: Grammy award-winning, singer-songwriter Kimya Dawson brings her soulful and tender folk to Up Late.
16 September: Sydney’s Sampa the Great reveals her penchant for poetry and dense lyricism in songs from her 2015 debut studio album.
23 September: Award-winning Melbourne singer-songwriter Jess Ribeiro brings hazy rock, landscape ambience and 60s psych melodies from her new album Kill it Yourself to GOMA.
30 September: Melbourne’s Teeth & Tongue will mesmerise audiences with a captivating combinations of garage and psychedelic rock, disco, folk, R&B and pop on the last Friday of the exhibition.
Storytellers floor talk series will feature leaders in a wide range of fields, including Queensland Ballet Resident Designer Noeline Hill, author Ellen Van Neervan, designer and artisan Susan Dimasi and more.
